Questions to Ask Before Making a Large Purchase

Has something new caught your eye? Whether it’s a treadmill, an entertainment system, or new tools – you want to consider a variety of factors before committing to the next expensive purchase.

1. Do I Have Cash To Pay For This Large Purchase?

If you have the funds on hand to pay cash or use your debit card for the purchase, this will help to avoid any additional fees. If you have to pay with a credit card, try using one with the lowest interest rate. Be sure that you can meet the monthly payments and avoid racking up additional interest that out weighs the benefits of the purchase.

2. Is This the Best Price?

There are always ways to save extra money. Visit coupon sites for instant savings. Many stores have price match programs if you can find a better deal somewhere else. You can also consider purchasing a previously owned item for less. Visit PennyHoarder to find a list of sites and resources to find coupons and additional deals.

3. How Many Hours of Work Will it Take to Pay For This Large Purchase?

Is it worth the price after you consider the level of effort it requires? Take a few days to consider the purchase to determine if it’s something you really need.

4. How Else Could I Spend This Money?

Are there other big purchases that you need to spend money on soon? Double check your budget that you have enough money to cover your planned expenses.

5. Have I Splurged Recently?

If you can afford it, there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself but how often is too often? After several treats, it becomes a habit and doesn’t feel the same. You may benefit from waiting before your next big purchase.

6. How Often Will I Use This Item?

Something you’ll only use a few times a year might now be worth the money. Compare the perks of the item versus the cost and effort of your current process. It might be worth the ease or saving money in the long run.

7. How Much Will This Money Be Worth If I Were To Put It Into Savings?

You may have the money for the purchase, but how much more could you earn if you saved it? Check out this SmartAssest investment calculator to get that magic number. The results might surprise you.
