Avoid Login Spoofing Scams

Login spoofing scams are a type of ‘smishing’ scam where imposters will impersonate a financial institution or business and send you a text message or email alerting you that something is amiss with your account.

It could be an alert that your account is locked, and you must take action to restore it, or that a large purchase has been made from your account, and you will be charged if you do not login and cancel it.

These scammers may include personal information in an effort to make their message look more legitimate. Even if a message contains your name or other information about you, do not trust it.

The common thread is that scammers want you to login to your account through the link they provide, which allows them to steal your information, drain your accounts, or sell stolen information to other scammers and hackers.

A scam attempting to target WeStreet members surfaced but has been shut down. Scammers tried sending texts like the one above, requesting that you login to your account to view a recent charge or update your information.

These messages include a link that would look like it’s taking you to WeStreet’s website. The link actually leads to a website created by the scammer to steal your information including login information, passwords, and any other information that you enter. These imposter websites can look very convincing at a glance and may seem legitimate.

The only thing that gives away that the above image is of a fake website login page is the URL address. Rather than memorizing the login URL information for websites, if you receive an alert of some kind through a text message or email, do not click the link within. Login to your account the way you usually do by going directly to the company’s website or app.

Avoiding Login Spoofing Scams

To avoid falling victim to a login spoofing scam, remember to not click any links that are sent to you via text or email, especially if they are from a phone number or email address that you do not recognize.

If you believe that there may be a legitimate claim for you to review, login to Online or Mobile Banking through WeStreet’s website or mobile app and view the transaction there.

You can also contact WeStreet’s Member Care Center if you have questions or concerns about a transaction or payment that you have been alerted to.

What to Do if You Have Been Targeted

If you encounter a login spoofing scam (or any other kind of scam) take a screenshot and report the incident to the company that the scammer is impersonating. Be sure to not respond to the scammer as responding in any way may cause you to be a target for future scams.
